Description

Late 18th century. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay (at ground), rectangular-plan house on corner site closing long terrace to W in Stonehaven's New Town. Ashlar with cherry caulking and finely droved ashlar margins with masons marks.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: late 20th century gabled porch to centre bay at ground with panelled timber door behind, windows in flanking bays (that to left out of alignment) and 2 windows close to eaves at 1st floor, 2 canted dormer windows above.

E ELEVATION: gabled elevation with window (altered from door) at ground, further window to centre above and tiny attic window giving way to dominant broad gablehead stack.

N (CAMERON STREET) ELEVATION: tall narrow stair window off-centre right, with windows to outer bays at ground and 1st floor, and small modern rooflight to centre.

Non-traditional sash and case effect windows, multi-pane glazing to stair window. Small grey slates. Tall coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes and polygonal cans; ashlar-coped skews.

INTERIOR: some early detail retained including moulded cornices and sideboard alcove, 6-panelled doors with architraves, dado rails and cantilevered dog-leg staircase with plain timber balusters.

BOUNDARY WALLS: high flat-coped rubble and harl boundary walls.

ANCILLARY BUILDING: rubble ancillary (cool house) erected against boundary wall with stone flag floor and unglazed opening.

Statement of Interest

Group with Nos 2 and 3 Carron Terrace and 41-51 Cameron Street. The east end of Carron Terrace and Cameron Street constitutes a run of fine late 18th to early 19th century houses of some quality. Woodburn, with its fine stonework and from where a rare view of the sea can still be glimpsed, opens both of these streets in the planned New Town of Robert Barclay of Ury. The grid iron plan was laid out in 1797 on Arduthie Estate lands purchased by Robert's father (also Robert) in 1759.
