Description

Circa 1890. 2-storey and attic, 4-bay, asymmetrical, piend and platform roofed, late plain classical mansion with single storey and attic service wing. Stugged ashlar. Band course, main entablature with plain frieze of slight projection and low parapet 2 courses deep with ball-finialled angles; eaves course. Stone porch with consoled canopy and finialled angles.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: bay to right of centre with porch with panelled timber door, plate glass fanlight and single light to each return, window above with parapet raised over it and small piended dormer behind; small window immediately to left at ground, full-height raised chimney breast beyond with main cornice breaking forward; further window to each floor at outer left and right.

S (GARDEN) ELEVATION: slightly advanced bay to right with canted window at ground and single window above, 2 windows to left with single centrally positioned windows above.

W ELEVATION: variety of elements including canted projection at ground right with inglenook fireplace, large central stair window and polygonal-roofed canted window to left at ground.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: service wing projecting at right.

Plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar wallhead stacks with some cans.

INTERIOR: good decorative scheme in place. Decorative plasterwork cornicing and consoled arches; fine architraved 6- and 9-panelled timber doors with brass door furniture; dado rails and picture rails; timber shutters; parquet flooring. Front hall with encaustic-tiled floor and part-glazed screen door; dining room with carved archway to inglenook comprising later small red brick fireplace; timber dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and finialled newel posts; 1st floor room with marble fireplace.

ANCILLARY BUILDING: rectangular-plan, piend-roofed, slated, ashlar ancillary with boarded timber doors, to NW.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: semicircular-coped rubble boundary walls with coped square-section ashlar gatepiers.

Statement of Interest

Langdon's reserved classical exterior set within enclosure walls and a fine laid out garden, is complemented by a little altered interior with many fine details. It is one of a very few classical villas in the burgh of Stonehaven.
