Alexander C Pettigrew, 1883-4. Near rectangular-plan Victorian Gothic church. Whinstone; red sandstone dressings. Base course; decorative band course (to E elevation only) corbel table to wallhead of nave.
E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to 2 central arched entrances; roll-moulded trefoil arches within; 2-leaf timber boarded doors. Dividing and flanking muscular buttresses; triangular finials; buttress to outer left carries stone spire; octagonal turret; smaller octagonal turret to outer right. Parapeted porch. Hoodmoulded rose window; crowstepped gable; roundel within; cross finial. Finialed spire to outer right.
S ELEVATION: bowed stair tower to outer right; corbelled-out semi octagonal caphouse; finial. Timber door to right at ground; 3 sets of 3-light windows at ground; timber door at re-entrant angle to outer left. 6 small lights to nave.
N ELEVATION: 2 single windows to outer left at ground; 3 sets of 3-light windows; 8 small lights to nave. Recessed 4-bay section to outer left; timber door to left; 3 single windows. Hall to rear.
Plate tracery rose windows; stained leaded glass. Grey slate roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: chancel filled with organ by Peter Conacher & Co; stencilled pipes; round hoodmoulded W window; 7-light brass gasoliers flanking chancel arch; flanking timber doors. Timber pulpit, lectern, elders chairs and communion table and pews; stone font. Timber gallery to E; rose window. 3-bay stone arcades; granite columns; sandstone carved foliage capitals. Boarded ceiling; stencilling work (gablets and stars).
BOUNDARY WALLS, GATEPIERS AND GATES: whinstone boundary walls; circular pierced coping. Square-plan gatepiers with ornate decorative caps to central pedestrian entrance and to outer right pedestrian entrance; iron gates to both entrances.
Ecclesiastical building in use as such. Originally called West United Presbyterian Church. The church is notable for its muscular stepped buttresses and the interior stencilled ceiling.
