Description

W Scott, Architect, Edinburgh, 1859. Rectangular,
classical single storey former school, with 7-bay NE frontage
approached by wide flight steps. Polished ashlar frontage
and dressings, coursed tooled rubble flanks and rear.
Centre door masked by pedimented Roman Doric tetrastyle
portico with centre plaque in tympanum. Angle pilasters;
aproned windows; slightly narrower flanking centre door;
margined multi-plane glazing; eaves cornice and blocking
course. Centre peristyle drum tower with louvred vents,
octagonal upper portion with blocked clock faces and
narrow alternating facets, all margined; moulded cornices;
domed lead roof with cast-iron finial. Paired corniced ridge
stacks; piended slate roof.
Late 19th century rear extension. Low coped retaining
wall to street frontage and flanking steps. Ashlar
covered with linostone 1984.

Statement of Interest

Formerly Miller Academy, now houses Local Government offices

and Public Library. Donated by Rev. Alexander Miller of

Thurso and Free Church Minister of Buckie, Banffshire, at

cost of approximately $1,500. Centre plaque reads "Mille

Institution MDCCCLIX". Rear extension appears on 1906 OS

but not on 1st ed of 1873.
