Description

Later 18th century with mid 19th century projection to S and later alterations. 2-storey 3-bay house of harl-pointed sandstone rubble with droved dressings and polished ashlar margins; harled later projection to S elevation. Flush irregular quoins.

S ELEVATION: projection to centre and in bay to right. Squared and snecked stugged ashlar single storey porch addition to W re-entrant angle with base course, cornice and parapet. 9-panelled door with border-glazed rectangular fanlight above in polished ashlar margin. Bipartite window at ground and window at 1st floor above to S elevation of projection. Window to each floor in bay to left. Single storey half-piended addition to outer right with modern boarded door with 2-pane rectangular fanlight above to outer left and window to right.

N ELEVATION: round-arched border-glazed stair window to centre. Window to each floor of flanking bays. 2 windows to single storey addition to left.

E ELEVATION: gabled with round window to gablehead and window to left at 1st floor.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Slate roof; squared skewputt to NE. Broad, tall ashlar coped wallhead stack to E elevation; rendered wallhead stack to W elevation similarly proportioned.

INTERIOR: shutters in place. Brown marble fireplace to principal ground floor room (later projection); white marble fireplace to 1st floor principal room. Timber banister to front and rear staircases.

BOUNDARY WALLS: tall harl-pointed rubble walls with droved sandstone to gate.

OUTBUILDINGS: running N-S to E of manse. Single storey. Blank to W elevation. 2 carriage/gighouse openings to outer right (now garages) and 2 further boarded doors (former stables). Slate roof except pantiles to outer left.

Statement of Interest

The house is unusual, although following a norm within Gavinton, in that the principal elevation is not to the road side but instead determined by direction. Hence the rear is backing upon the street. The manse appears on the map of 1771. The later projection to the S and the outbuildings were built by 1857.
