Description

David Bryce, later 19th century. Ashlar Jacobean style gateway with pulvinated bands to gatepiers and nailhead panels on central pilasters between bands; corniced doorpiece to pedestrian entrances flanking with openwork linked octagonal strapwork pediments above. Flanking walls with ashlar balustrading terminated to each side with banded coped piers surmounted by obelisk. Banded gatepiers to entrance adjacent to North Lodge (to N of principal gate) with quadrant wall to coped pier surmounted with ashlar classical urn.

Statement of Interest

The gate is of great prominence on the road from Duns to Gavinton and was originally important as a welcome to visitors, giving them a foretaste of the house that lay beyond. As this has now been demolished the surviving buildings on the estate are listed within a B-Group.
