Description

Dated 1916. Cast iron clock. Sandstone plinth with commemorative plaque "Erected from the proceeds of Social Betterment Dairy Scheme"; plain rectangular cast iron box shaft with moulded base and cornice and stop chamfered arrises; pressed(?) leg from each corner, curving to reduced cap supporting circular clock with Roman face.

Statement of Interest

The ?Social Betterment Dairy Scheme? was created to encourage the consumption of milk in preference to alcohol, "during the First World War, Lloyd George?s Government were concerned about excessive drinking, especially amongst munitions workers. Absenteeism had a serious effect on the war effort. Further steps were taken by the Government. A law was passed forbidding a man to treat a friend to a drink. Prominent notices were displayed in pubs saying ?No Treating?. The clock was erected because of the Scheme".
