Description

Circa 1875. 4-storey, 6-bay including angle bays, symmetrical classical tenement with shops at ground. Cream sandstone ashlar; rubble to N. Cornice to shopfronts; shouldered and lugged architraves to windows above ground; bracketed cills; panelled aprons to 1st floor windows; cill course to 3rd floor windows; giant order, strip pilasters with decorative fan-motif panels to base, to angle bays; cornice and blocking course.

E (NEWINGTON ROAD) ELEVATION: tenement door to right of centre; boarded door; plate glass fanlight; blank central bay above; regular fenestration to outer right and left; bipartite windows to angle bays. Modern bank (Clydesdale) to ground floor to right; traditional shopfront to ground floor to left (Spence's Chemist); doorway to left of centre; 2-leaf, panelled outer door; inner door with plate glass panel; plate glass fanlight with original printed advertisement; pestle and mortar trade sign above; 2-leaf door with plate glass panels to angle bay; plate glass fanlight; plain pilasters between openings; panels and pilasters with capitals to angle bay; traditional lettering to frieze.

S (WEST NEWINGTON PLACE) ELEVATION: 2-bay, blank bay to right; regular fenestration to left; shopfront continues as on Newington Road at ground.

Predominantly original 4-pane, timber, sash and case windows; some plate glass; pivot windows to 1st floor right of centre. Grey slate piended roof; coursed and coped wallhead stacks to E and S; rendered and coped wallhead stack to N; moulded cans.

INTERIOR: dispensing room fittings, including drawers to rear of Spence?s Chemist.
