Description

Early 19th century. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, rectangular-plan, traditionally detailed classical house with single storey addition. Rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and ashlar entrance elevation, eaves cornice and blocking course.

S ELEVATION: broad pilastered doorcase at centre with cornice and blocking course; panelled door and rectangular, plate glass fanlight.

Slightly projecting 3-light window to left with cornice and blocking course; window to right. Regular fenestration at 1st floor. Later, slate-hung gabled dormers above outer bays. Single storey wing recessed to right with slightly advanced 3-light window.

N ELEVATION: stair window at centre, with windows flanking to each floor in widely spaced outer bays. Single storey wing with French window slapping, projecting to left and clasping house in piended corner.

W ELEVATION: windows at centre or off-centre. Later single storey low-key, flat-roofed addition to left.

E ELEVATION: window to each floor at centre or off-centre. Single storey gabled addition to right.

Small-pane timber sash and case windows. 4-pane to dormers and 1 attic window. Grey slate roof. Ashlar coped skews and broad gablehead corniced stacks with full complements of octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen.

Statement of Interest

Turfhills evidently stands on or by the site of an earlier house which was apparently surrounded by Highlanders during the 1745 Rising.
