Description

Robert Lugar, early 19th century. U-plan castellated Gothick former stables, now converted to residential use. Bull-faced ashlar, painted rubble wings.

ROAD RANGE: long near-symmetrical elevation. Slightly advanced entrance block at centre, segmental-arch at centre ground, broad Y-traceried tripartite window at centre above; crenellated gable, squat terminal turets, ashlar, arcaded and crenellated bellcote/lantern at apex. Lower 3-bay flanking wings with terminal square towers to outer left and right. right. Wing to right with crenellated parapet,

3 arrowslits at upper stage, pointed arch window at centre ground. Wing to left, parapet removed, bipartite arrowslits at upper stage, modern window under eaves at centre (arrowslit blocked). Square tower, pointed lancet at centre, machicolated crenellation.

E WING: painted rubble; poorly converted to residential use, arches infilled as windows on ground, small windows symmetrically disposed at upper level, modern windows.

W WING: modern doors and windows.

Moden plate glass top-hopper windows. Grey slate roof, lead flashings, slate removed and sarking exposed on right wing.

Statement of Interest

The former stable building to Tullichewan Castle which was demolished in 1954. The lodge, gates and gatepiers of Tullichewan Castle, in Alexandria, are listed separately.
