Description

Late 18th century with mid 19th and 20th century additions and alterations. 4-storey and attic, 3-bay shop. Painted droved sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Modern granite faced shopfronts built out at ground and 1st floors (that at 1st floor earlier, with multi-pane glazing). Original 2nd floor with former eaves cornice. Later 3rd floor with pair of bipartite round-headed windows and central blind panel; bracketed cornice and diminutive coped parapet. Later mansard with pair of large multi-pane box dormers.

Timber sash and case plate glass windows to 2nd and 3rd floors; casements to 1st and 4th. Grey slates; stone stacks.

Statement of Interest

Listed as a surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. The 1st floor shopfront is of a piece with that adjoining at 78 Princes Street (see separate listing).
