Description

Earlier 19th century, possibly incorporating earlier fabric. U-plan steading with later range to S closing square. Dark whinstone rubble, part coursed, with droved long and short work quoins.

N RANGE: courtyard elevation: 2-storey with 2 cart arches to right of centre, windows above with further window to outer right; door to left of centre below hayloft opening, window beyond to left at both floors and further door to outer left.

N ELEVATION: small advanced porch(?) with slightly swept roof and window to right of centre, door on return to right. 3 further windows to left at 1st floor.

W RANGE: courtyard elevation: 2-storey with doorway and small adjacent window to left, part-blocked window to right; lower range with door extending to outer left.

E RANGE: courtyard elevation: single storey with blocked window to left and doorway to right.

S RANGE: later, single storey. Lintel dated ?1703?set into wall.

Some 4-pane glazing in timber windows. Corrugated asbestos roofing. Ashlar-coped skews.

FARMHOUSE: 2-storey and single storey, L-plan, harled farmhouse with painted stone margins, adjoining steading to W and N. Entrance to S with advanced gable to right, door in 2-storey porch in re-entrant angle to left. Mainly timber sash and case windows, slated roof, coped ashlar stacks and ashlar coped skews.

BOUNDARY WALLS: coped rubble boundary walls.

Statement of Interest

Steading shown as U-plan on 1st OS map. 1703 lintel is thought to originate from earlier (or altered) farmhouse. According to Snoddy, ?Harestanes? "indicates a boundary marked by stones". Farmhouse of marginal interest owing to alterations but relationship to steading and potential have justified inclusion.
