Description

Later 19th century with later alterations and additions. 2-storey 3-bay U-plan house of squared and snecked whinstone with stugged red sandstone dressings. Flush quoins; stop-chamfered arrises.

SW ELEVATION: symmetrical. Panelled door to centre with plate glass rectangular fanlight above; gabled canopy on timber brackets; window at 1st floor above, breaking eaves in gabled dormerhead. Bipartite windows at ground in each flanking bay with windows at 1st floor above, breaking eaves as centre.

SE ELEVATION: 2-bay. Gabled blank bay to left. Tripartite window at ground of bay to right with window at 1st floor breaking eaves in gabled dormerhead.

NW ELEVATION: 4-bay. Gabled 2-bay group to right with window at 1st floor of inner bay. Window in bay to inner left, breaking eaves and gabled. Outer bays blank at 1st floor.

NE ELEVATION: small service court to right of centre. Single storey outbuilding to outer right.

4-pane and plate glass timber sash and case windows. Slate roof, platformed at centre. Exposed roof rafters. Sandstone coped wallhead stacks to SE, NW and NE (outer right). Octagonal stacks. Plain barge boarding to gables and timber finials to door canopy and at 1st floor gabled windows to SW elevation.

INTERIOR: not seen fully, 1995. Encaustic tiles to vestibule. Timber banister to stairs.

BOUNDARY WALLS: whinstone rubble wall with rubble coping. Timber double gates to SE. Service entrance to N.

Statement of Interest

The house was originally the rectory for the adjacent congregational church, St John?s Episcopal Church, Bleachfield Road (see separate listing). The church sold it in 1973.
