Description

Earlier 19th century with later alterations and additions; subdivided in mid 20th century. 2-storey with basement, 5-bay house. Line-rendered with droved ashlar dressings to SE; droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings to NW, line-rendered at basement. Base course to SE; band course between basement and ground, ground and 1st floor; cornice and blocking course.

SE ELEVATION: deep-set panelled door to centre with multi-paned rectangular fanlight above set in broad pilastered and corniced doorpiece; window at 1st floor above. Window to each flanking bay to each floor, except in bay to outer left where modern door at ground with plate glass rectangular fanlight above. Quoin strips. Tablet to centre and to outer extreme of elevation above eaves.

NW ELEVATION: 5-bay. 3 bays to centre grouped closely and slightly advanced. Moulded string course between ground and 1st floor. Window to each floor of each of central 3-bay group with panelled apron beneath each of windows at ground; window to outer bays of 3-bay group at basement. Window to each storey of outer bays. Clasping buttresses with tablets above eaves.

NE ELEVATION: 2-bay. Window at 1st floor of bay to left with modern door at basement, flanked to immediate right by window. Window at ground of bay to right with late corbelled and advanced oriel window at 1st floor above, with cornice and blocking course.

12-pane timber sash and case windows to all except modern glazing at basement. Slate platform and piended roof with line-rendered coped stacks to platform.

INTERIOR: plasterwork and ceiling rose to principal room at 1st floor. Ground floor not seen, in 1995, papier machee work to principal room of ground. Shutters in place, 1995.

Statement of Interest

The lodge, No 4 Viewfield Lane (see separate listing) is dated 1824. It may be assumed that the house dates from this time also. Wood?s map does not show the house, and it does not appear on any map until 1858. The subdivision of the house took place in the 1950s (according to the present owner of the upper flat).
