Description

Circa 1900. Gabled, rectangular-plan coastguard Life-Saving Apparatus House. Squared and snecked sandstone with some shallow, bull-faced dressings. Depressed arch garage door to NE gable with 2-leaf boarded doors. Segmental-headed windows to long elevations, timber small-pane bipartite. Timber bargeboards. Blue slate roof.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Fishtown ensemble, contemporary with a later stage in its development including the neighbouring outlook tower. The apparatus comprised rockets and lines that were wheeled to the shore and fired at boats in distress on the rocks. A similar one at Carnoustie has been raised by a storey and another has been identified at Whitby.
