Probably A MacMaster, circa 1900. 3-storey with wallhead attic, tenement with shops at ground. Ashlar with raised quoin strips. Mutuled cavetto cornice over ground and 2nd floors. Raised and tabbed margins to 1st and 2nd floors, segmentally pedimented windowheads to attic. Stone mullions.
S (HIGH STREET) ELEVATION: 3 shops to ground below common cornice and traditional fascia with flanking pendant finials and carved bosses. Pilasters with delicate Ionic capitals flank panelled timber door with small-paned oval fanlight to off-centre right; traditional shop with in-canted centre door, and flanking display windows in bay to right of centre; shop to left of centre with door to left and display window to right all below deep fanlight, pilaster (as above) beyond to left and further shop to outer left. 1st and 2nd floors with windows to bays
2 and 3 and bipartite windows to outer bays. Attic with windows to right and left of centre flanked by scooped wallhead with pedimented windows to outer bays, further scooped wallhead beyond all windowheads breaking eaves. Chimney gablet with hoodmoulded and keystoned, round- headed niche on corbelled brackets over centre bays.
8- and 12-pane glazing patterns in bays to left of centre at 1st floor and attic, plate glass glazing elsewhere all to timber sash and case windows except bays to right of centre at attic with modern pivot windows. Fixed display windows at ground. Grey slates. Cavetto-coped ashlar stacks with full complement of cans, ashlar coped skews. Cast-iron downpipes with decorative fixings to SW.
INTERIOR: egg and dart cornicing in shop at No 305.
Material treatment and stylistic links together with common eaves cornice suggest that MacMaster, author of the neighbouring 295-7 High Street, was also designer of 299-305.
