James Thomson (Baird and Thomson), 1892. Italian Renaissance. 4-storey office building with ground floor bank, ground floor altered at No 340, 6 x 5 bays. Polished red ashlar, vermiculated surrounds to ground floor W return. Plinth. Sash and case windows in architraves.
ELEVATION TO ARGYLE STREET: bays arranged 1-4-1. Arched ground floor with moulded imposts, cills. Coupled central entrances with double- leaf panelled doors, bracketted pedestals above. Ground floor frieze, dentil cornice. Central 4-bay Corinthian columned section with recessed glazing rising from 1st to 2nd floor; balconies between floors, sculpted frieze over. Continuous dentil band, modillion cornice, recessed, architraved windows at 3rd floor.
OUTER BAYS: 1st floor console corniced windows; sculpted frieze forming 2nd floor cill band, tripartite 3rd floor windows.
ELEVATION TO WEST CAMPBELL STREET, W RETURN: arched ground floor windows with scroll keyblocks, cast-iron grilles. Canted bays at 1st and 2nd floor, 1st, 3rd and 5th bays from S. 1st floor windows console corniced. 2nd floor windows pedimented in canted bays. 3rd floor windows as Argyle Street. Axial stacks. Slate roof.
Built for Clydesdale Bank. Bank interior altered. Chimneystacks and parapets, Renaissance detailed, recently (1988) removed.
