Description

Late 19th century. 2-storey and basement, 10-bay, near rectangular plan gabled terrace of houses; attached coachhouse to outer right with bartizan. Stugged and snecked sandstone to Nos 1-4; harl to No 5; painted ashlar dressings. Painted margins to Nos 1-4; quoins; long and short surrounds; hoodmoulds and label stops in mullioned and transomed ground windows at Nos 1-4; gables to windows at Nos 1-4; wrought finials; heavy consoled balconies over doorways in Nos 1-4; decorative heavy square finials.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: single window and roll-moulded entrance doorway in bay to outer left; fanlight; single window at 1st floor. Tripartite window with hoodmould over, in gabled bay at ground; 2 single windows at 1st floor. Roll moulded entrance doorway at ground in 2 bays left of centre; fanlight only in bay to left; single windows at 1st floor. Tripartite windows at ground; 2 single windows at 1st floor in large gabled bays to centre and right of centre. Roll-moulded doorway at ground; single window at 1st floor in bay to right. Coachhouse at outer right comprises coach arch infilled with picture window to left at ground; round-arched entrance doorway to right; scrolled pediment. Dividing string course. 2 single arched windows at gable; half- timbering; small castellated parapet to left; water tabling; narrow parapet beneath gable; square bartizan to right; arched light; ogee roofed turret.

2-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; coped apex stacks, sandstone to Nos 1-4, brick to No 5; moulded cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low mutual dividing walls between properties.

Statement of Interest

An unusual Victorian house fronting Corstorphine Road. Of particular interest is the coach-house to the W with its Tudor-style half- timbering.
