William C Joass, 1867; recast William Mackintosh, 1902. 2-storey and attic, irregular plan Baronial hotel on corner site. Rubble sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Chamfered reveals, crowstepped gables; 1st floor windows breaking eaves in dormerheads.
N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: doorway with glazed cast-iron canopy in recessed bay to centre; single window above. Bipartite window at ground in bay to right; tripartite window above with segmental-arched corbel table over; single window (later) set in gablehead. Circular corner tower in bay to outer right; 3 single windows to ground and 1st floors; swept conical roof with fishscale slate banding. Advanced
3 bay range to left of entrance; pedimented doorway with single window to left in bay to outer left; bipartite window at 1st floor above; single and bipartite windows to both floors in remaining bays.
W ELEVATION: 3-bay. Single windows to both floors in gabled bay to outer left; carved pediment to 1st floor window. Single windows to both floors in central bay. Bipartite windows to both floors in bay to outer right.
E AND S ELEVATIONS: not seen 1997. 2 pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; corniced gablehead stacks; cast iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen 1997.
Good Baronial detailing in the corner tower, crowstepped gables, and pedimented dormers, whilst the glazed canopy reflects the building's role as a railway hotel.
