Description

Later 19th century. Whinstone rubble ice house comprising brick vaulted passage accessing deep, brick-vaulted, circular-plan chamber to NW. Cream sandstone ashlar dressings to round-arched doorway centred in arched frontispiece (door/gate missing).

Statement of Interest

With its brick-vaulted passage, circular-plan chamber and round-arched entrance, this ice house, formerly associated with the nearby, now ruinous Clifton Park House, is a good example of its type. Although the house dates from 1846 and the time of Robert Kerr Elliot, the ice house is thought to be of a later date - possibly being commissioned by Robert Henry Elliot, who inherited Clifton upon the death of his father in 1873.
