Description

Late 19th century. Near-symmetrical, single storey with attic pair of half-timbered Old English style cottages forming 6-bay block (left cottage 4-bay, right cottage 2-bay); slightly advanced, gabled bays flanking centre. Red brick at ground; polished sandstone mullions; red brick voussoir detailing surmounting openings; projecting cills; half timbering to attic.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: timber panelled doors at ground in bays to outer left and right; quadripartite windows at ground in slightly advanced, penultimate bays to outer left and right; tripartite windows centred in apex above. Bipartite window at ground in bay off-set to left of centre; quadripartite window off-set to right; pitched, tripartite dormer centred above.

Predominantly leaded casement glazing. Graded grey slate roof; corniced whitewashed harl ridge stacks flanking centre; various terracotta cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1996.

RAILINGS, GATEPIERS AND GATES: simple wrought-iron railings enclosing site; ball-finialed piers flanking pedestrian entrances; wrought-iron gates.

Statement of Interest

Originally 3 cottages (each 2-bay), sympathetically converted into 2. An unusual style in its Scottish context but relatively common within the confines of Mount Stuart (see separate list entries for East Lodge, Old School House and Kerrycroy Village). Here, note the high quality brick work, half-timbering, timber panelled doors, iron railings and corniced stacks. Later single storey pitched garage block to N.
