Description

Late 19th century. Near-symmetrical 2-storey, 7-bay Old English style half-timbered former school; subdivided to form pair of cottages (left cottage 4-bay, right cottage 3-bay; single storey wing recessed at centre). Harl-pointed red rubble sandstone at ground; red sandstone dressings; half-timbering at 1st floor. Raised base course; overhanging timber bracketed eaves. Tooled red rubble quoins; tooled long and short surrounds to slightly droved, chamfered openings; projecting cills; chamfered mullions. Harl-pointed rubble at rear.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: tripartite windows at ground in 2 bays flanking centre; tripartite windows at ground in slightly advanced, penultimate bays to outer left and right; bipartite windows centred in half-timbered gableheads above. 2-bay entrance wing recessed to outer left comprising boarded timber door off-set to right of centre, single window off-set to left. Boarded timber door centred in pitched entrance porch recessed to outer right.

Leaded 2- and 4-pane timber sash and case glazing. Red clay-tile roof; terracotta ridge detailing; coped ashlar ridge stacks; circular terracotta cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1996.

BOUNDARY WALL: round-arched rubble coping to harl-pointed random rubble wall dividing boundaries at rear.

Statement of Interest

An unusual style in its Scottish context but relatively common within the confines of Mount Stuart (see separate list entries for East Lodge, Kerrylamont Cottage and Kerrycroy Village). Here, note the leaded glazing, bracketed eaves, half-timbering and terracotta ridge detailing
