Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay farmhouse with later additions and alterations. Tooled coursed sandstone with droved dressings; rubble to rear. Base course; strip quoins.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: near-symmetrical. Gabled bay advanced to centre with regular fenestration to ground and 1st floors. Doorway with polished decorative dressing and panelled timber door to bay to right. Window to ground floor of bay to left; dormer window breaking eaves to 1st floor above.

NE ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 4-bay. 2 bays to left gabled with window to each bay of ground floor; single window centred in gable of 1st floor. Penultimate bay to right recessed with small-pane bipartite window. Gabled single storey bay to right advanced; boarded glazed door flanked to right by 3 windows to left return.

NW ELEVATION: single storey with 3 irregularly placed windows; gabled window breaking eaves recessed to right.

SW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 3-bay. Gabled bay to right advanced with bipartite window to centre of ground floor; single window to centre of 1st floor. Centre and left bays recessed; bipartite window to centre flanked by gabled bay with small-pane door to left.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof with lead ridges; coped stone skews. Shouldered, stugged, coped wallhead stacks with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

Statement of Interest

Thornton Farm, which appears on the 1st Edition OS Map, was originally the home farm to Whitehill House (now St. Joseph's Hospital, see separate listing). It has been suggested that the farmhouse was that of the Whitehill Estate factor.
