Description

Earlier to mid 19th century with later alterations. 2-storey and attic, 2-bay, rectangular-plan block, with oculus to symmetrical gabled elevation to street, comprising 2 houses; Number 9, (to Albert Street), slightly higher, with 2-bays to close; Number 11 (set behind, abutting) with 3-bays to close. Painted cement-rendered and lined at ground to Albert Street; cement-rendered and lined above; harled elsewhere.

S (ALBERT STREET) ELEVATION: deep-set, 2-leaf timber-panelled doors at ground in bay to centre; large shop windows flanking. Window at each floor in each bay above; oculus to gablehead; gablehead stack above.

E (CLOSE) ELEVATION: NUMBER 9: 3 windows, set close, at ground; 2 evenly disposed windows at 1st and 2nd floors above. NUMBER 11: part-glazed door with window flanking at ground in bay centre; window at 1st floor above. Window at each floor in bay to right; attic window above. Bipartite window at ground with canted oriel window at 1st floor in bay to left.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: window at each floor in bay to left; window at ground in bay to right; gablehead stack above.

W ELEVATION: irregularly fenestrated.

Variety of glazing patterns including replacement timber sash and case windows, timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights; uPVC windows. Grey slate roof; stone ridge; stone skews to S; multi-flue corniced gablehead stacks to N and S; uPVC rainwater goods.

INTERIORS: converted as cafe at ground to Number 9; unseen elsewhere, 1998.

Statement of Interest

Two buildings remaining relatively intact in plan. Traditionally orinted with the gabled end to the street, the block represents a typical Kirkwall layout with a narrow close giving access to properties. The Albert Street elevation is enlivened by the gablehead oculus.
