18th century, re-worked 19th century; later alterations. 3-storey, 2-bay, rectangular-plan symmetrical piended tenement, converted as shop at ground. Painted cement-rendered and lined at ground; harled above. Concrete margins to windows. Modern timber fascia over band course between ground and 1st floors.
E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: deep-set modern glazed door with large rectangular fanlight at ground in bay to centre; large shop windows in each bay flanking. Window at each floor in each bay above.
N (SIDE) ELEVATION, IN CLOSE: irregularly fenestrated; tall wallhead stack, set to left.
S (SIDE) ELEVATION: large shop window at ground in bay to outer right; window at 1st floor above. Tall wallhead stack set to right of centre.
Large shop windows with 2-pane upper border at ground; 12- and 8-pane timber sash and case windows above. Grey slate piended roof; tall, harled, corniced wallhead stacks to N and S; uPVC rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: converted to shop at ground; unseen above, 1998.
Bridge Street is one of the oldest parts of Kirkwall, and marks the original shore of the Oyce. It provided initial access to the town from the harbour, the east pier at the end of the street having been completed in 1811. Features of interest include the unusual piended roof and the tall wallhead stacks.
