Early 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan symmetrical end-of-terrace house, built on ground rising to W, with adjoining 2-storey house to W. Harled.
S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: timber panelled door with 2-pane letterbox fanlight at ground din bay to centre; window at 1st floor above. Window at each floor in each bay flanking.
E (SIDE) ELEVATION: blank with raised flue to centre.
4-pane timber sash and case windows. Traditional graded Caithness stone tiled roof; stone ridge; stone skews; harled, corniced stacks to E and W; cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen, 1998.
BOUNDARY WALLS AND RAILINGS: low squared and coursed rubble walls with ridged concrete cope; fleur-de-lys-headed railings; similar gate to centre.
Clay Loan breaks the old main street and climbs steeply to the west to Gallow Ha, the former place of public execution in Kirkwall. Originally the Common or South Loan, it takes its present name from its use as source of mortar for Kirkwall houses. Number 54 is of particular interest as it retains its timber glazing, its traditional Caithness stone-tiled roof and decorative railings.
