Description

Late 17th century. 2-storey, 3-bay with single storey, 2-bay wings, rectangular-plan former manse with later 19th century additions. Pink sandstone rubble with droved dressings, stugged squared and snecked sandstone ashlar with stugged and droved chamfered dressings to later 19th century additions. Projecting cills.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; later 19th century gabled 19th century bay advanced to right; 3-light canted window to ground floor, bipartite window to 1st floor; window to 1st floor of right return; 19th century 3-plane, single bay entrance bay through ground and 1st floors of re-entrant angle to left, roll-moulded doorway with panelled timber door, flanked to left and right by geometric stained glass window, dividing band course, 4-pane window flanked to right by large pane modern window at 1st floor, balustraded parapet; bay to left obscured additions. Regular fenestration to flanking wing to left; 2 windows off-centre to left of wing to right, dormer to attic of piended roof, window to attic recessed to left.

NE ELEVATION: predominantly obscured by wing, advanced flue flanked to left by small window in gablehead; wing advanced to ground floor with uPVC glazed door to centre flanked to left and right by 10-pane windows, small window to outer left.

NW ELEVATION: near-symmetrical; 3-bay block to centre; irregular fenestration to ground floor; small window to centre of 1st floor flanked to right by 4-pane window and left by 12-pane window. uPVC glazed 2-leaf doorway off-centre to left of right wing; 2 windows to ground floor of left wing, dormer window to attic.

Predominantly 2-pane and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Graded grey slate roof with lead ridge. Predominantly stone skews. Coped gablehead and wallhead stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALL: rubble coped rubble boundary wall with timber gate to NE.

Statement of Interest

Glenesk was probably built in the 17th century at the same time as the galleries were added to the adjacent Cockpen Old Parish Church (see separate listing).
