Description

18th and early 19th century. 3 adjoining buildings in close to rear of 96 High Street, 3 storeys, 2 properties harled, 1 squared and snecked sandstone.

S ELEVATION: house to E; harled, droved margins, 2 asymmetrical bays, , doors to left and right at ground. Tenement to centre; harled, 6 symmetrical bays, 2 doors to centre at ground, dormer-headed windows at 2nd floor. House to W terminating close; asymmetrical plan and elevations; single bay to right, panelled door at ground, architraved frame, narrow 3-pane glazed lights flanking, 4-pane rectangular fanlight, window at 1st and 2nd floors, panelled door at ground in return to left, 2-pane rectangular fanlight, advanced section to left, cast-iron lantern on corner, single bay, door at ground, window at 1st floor, advanced 2-storey section to left, single bay in return, window at 1st floor blinded, gable end of 2-storey section bordering on 104 High Street close, window to right at 1st floor, small window in gablehead.

E ELEVATION: adjoining 96 High Street.

W ELEVATION: 2 and 3-storey house terminating close, lower storeys not seen, 2 canted dormers above.

N ELEVATION: regular fenestration to 6-bay tenement, asymmetrical elevation to 2 and 3-storey house, chimney gable to right.

New 8-pane timber sash and case windows to 6-bay tenement, varied replacement windows to house to W. Grey slate roof; stone skews, skewputts; brick gablehead stacks to N and S and brick wallhead stack to N of house to W.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997 (see Notes).

BOUNDARY WALLS: rubblestone boundary walls to rear extending W, that on N side forming S wall of Railway Close.

Statement of Interest

Part of the 96 and 98 High Street and close B Group. This is known as "Poet's Close". The 2-bay house adjoining No 96 has within (when last surveyed) a fireplace dated 1711. The centre tenement has been the subject of an extensive restoration.
