Description

Possibly late 18th century in part with 19th century and later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay plain classical style, rectangular-plan farmhouse adjoining earlier 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan range at rear; further single storey with attic, rectangular-plan block recessed to left; single storey piended block recessed to right. Predominantly harl-pointed sandstone rubble; harled elevation to front main block and part lower range to outer left; sandstone ashlar dressings. Tooled rubble quoins to earlier blocks; tooled long and short surrounds to openings (droved sandstone margins to entrance block); projecting cills throughout. Single storey ancillary structure to W.

SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: main 3-bay block off-set to right with step to timber panelled door at ground in bay to left; rectilinear-patterned fanlight; corniced doorpiece; single window aligned at 1st floor. Single windows at both floors in 2 remaining bays to right. Single storey piended block recessed to outer right with blocked opening off-set to left of centre. 2-storey bay recessed to left of main block with single window at ground; timber-mullioned bipartite window at 1st floor. Single storey with attic, 3-bay range recessed to outer left with single window centred at ground; square-headed doors at ground in bays to outer left and right; single window at upper floor in bay to outer left.

SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: full-height gabled block advanced to outer left with single window centred at 1st floor. Full-height gabled block recessed to right with single storey, piended projection at ground.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: 4-bay block at centre (3-bay at 1st floor) with single windows in all bays at ground; single window centred at 1st floor; timber-mullioned bipartite windows in flanking bays. Single storey with attic, 3-bay range adjoined to outer right with irregularly-spaced single windows in all bays at ground; gabled, bipartite window breaking eaves off-set to left of centre; gabled single window breaking eaves off-set to right. Modern garage door in single storey, piended block adjoined to outer left.

Predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roofs; stone-coped skews; cast-iron rainwater goods. Corniced sandstone apex stacks to front; cans missing; corniced, brick-built apex stacks at rear; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

ANCILLARY STRUCTURE: single storey with attic, 2-bay rectangular-plan structure/store set to W of house. Harl-pointed sandstone rubble; droved quoins; droved long and short surrounds to square-headed openings. E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: boarded timber door in bay to left; single window in bay to right; 2-leaf boarded timber door in lean-to addition to outer right. 12-pane lazing in timber sash and case window; small rooflight. Corrugated-iron roof; stone-coped skews; replacement rainwater goods. INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

GARDEN WALLS: near rectangular-plan garden to NE with rubble-coped, harl-pointed rubble walls enclosing site (rubble barn enclosing side to SE); boarded timber doors. Single storey, harl-pointed rubble ancillary structure adjoining outer elevation NW wall. Small-pane glazing; corrugated-iron roof. INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATE: rubble walls partially enclosing site. Spearheaded iron vehicular gate to main entrance from road.

Statement of Interest

Recorded in the OS Name Book as a "...commodious farmhouse 2 stories high with suitable offices and a row of small cottages. Also attached ...a vegetable garden and a large farm." The differing rooflines suggest the rear range predates that which is now the entrance block. Rutherfurd notes a Mr John Elliot as farmer here in 1866.
