Description

Earlier to mid 19th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay house with butcher's shop at ground; residential accommodation at 1st floor; further 2-storey wing at rear; single storey, piended range set behind. Whitewashed harl; painted dressings. Raised band course dividing floors; narrow quoin strips; raised margins; projecting cills.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: part-glazed timber door centred at ground; plate glass fanlight; single window aligned above. Shop window at ground in bay to left; single window at 1st floor. Single windows at both floors in bay to right. Single storey addition recessed to outer right with single window to left; heavily chamfered angle to right.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: blank gable-end to left. 2-storey block to right with door centred at ground; single window aligned above; single window at ground in bay to right. Single storey addition projecting to outer right.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: single storey range running E-W with 2-leaf boarded timber door breaking eaves off-set to left; remainder not seen 1998. Taller block set behind.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: blank gable-end to right. 2-storey block to left with small-paned window at ground to right; door to left; single window aligned at 1st floor. Small-paned window in single storey addition to outer left.

Plate glass and 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; some fixed-pane and modern windows. Grey slate roof; stone-coped skews; moulded skewputts. Corniced, brick-built apex stacks; octagonal cans. Corrugated-iron roof to single storey range at rear.

INTERIOR, BUTCHER'S SHOP: tiled walls with continuous decorative banding at lower and upper levels (key pattern and floral motifs respectively). Marble counter. Modern ceiling. Remainder not seen 1998.

Statement of Interest

A relatively early house, fronting Chirnside's Main Street. The decorative tiles in the butcher's shop are particularly notable.
