Description

Mid 19th century with later alterations. Single storey group of traditional Orcadian farm buildings forming 3 parallel ranges with narrow closses between lying on N-S axis, comprising central range with 2-bay cottage, built on ground falling to S and 2 lower single-bay stores abutting to N; parallel single bay store/byre to E with lower single bay store abutting; 3 further single bay sheds/byres, parallel to W with 2 to N abutting. Further derelict buildings sited to S, also on N-S axis, straddling former burn. Roughly coursed rubble.

COTTAGE RANGE: E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: deep-set boarded door in bay to centre. Window set wide in bay to left. Deep-set door set to right in store bay to right. Doorway in lower bay to outer right. W (REAR) ELEVATION: centred window with window to outer left to cottage. Blank rear elevations to stores abutting. S (SIDE) ELEVATION: window set to left; gablehead stack above.

E RANGE: W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: deep-set door, set to right. Centred deep-set door to lower store to left. E (REAR) ELEVATION: blank. S (SIDE) ELEVATION: window set to right; gablehead stack above.

W RANGE: E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATIONS: centred stable door in byre to centre. Centred door in byre abutting to right (N). N (END) ELEVATIONS: boarded door set to left of byre to S.

6-pane timber sash and case windows to cottage. Corrugated-iron cottage roof; concrete ridge; coped skews; rubble corniced gablehead stacks. Flagstone roofs elsewhere; some turf to W range; rubble corniced stacks to E range.

INTERIORS: majority not seen, 1998. Exposed rafters and tie beams to W byres; flagstone animal stall divisions.

Statement of Interest

A group of traditional Orkney farm buildings, that has remained relatively unchanged. The main longhouse continues to be used as a dwelling house with livestock accommodation adjacent. The existence of traditionally roofed outbuildings gives the group interest, as does the possible use of the now derelict buildings straddling the gulley, probably housing a water-powered mill.
