Description

Early to earlier 19th century, redeveloped by Aitken & Turnbull of Hawick, late 20th century. 3-storey, 3-bay, end-terrace tenement with 2 shops, set on sloping site, with full-height bowed stair tower to rear (1980s). Roughly squared rubble, painted to ground floor, with painted ashlar dressings; rendered to side and rear. Ground-floor cornice; band course dividing 1st and 2nd floors. Raised long-and-short quoins to SW corner. 5-bay shopfront with one blind doorway and 2 doors with rectangular fanlights to centre; regular fenestration with raised ashlar margins and projecting cills above; irregular fenestration elsewhere.

Plate glass windows to shops; predominantly 4-pane glazing in sash and case windows elsewhere. Grey slate roof. Coped, rendered gablehead stack with circular clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

Statement of Interest

B-Group comprises Nos 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 19, 2, 4, 6, 10 and 12 Howegate - see separate list entries. Interest here lies both in the traditional character of the buildings and in the irregular street which they make up - its curved form being of particular note since it is said to follow the medieval building line.

Comprehensive redevelopment of Howegate from 1978 onwards by Aitken Turnbull resulted in two Civic Trust Awards (1982 and 1986), as well as a Borders Regional Council Award for Conservation (1986). It seems likely that the central doorway in the shopfront originally led to the close, and that the now-blocked opening to its left was that of the left-hand shop.
