Description

Circa 1840 with later additions and alterations. Symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan farmhouse with piended porch to front; lower wing at rear forming near L-plan; further single storey addition beyond. Coursed sandstone to front and side (NW); coursed render to side (SE); droved sandstone dressings; heavily-pointed sandstone rubble to rear additions. Droved quoins; droved margins; projecting cills.

SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: single window in piended porch projecting at centre; single window aligned at 1st floor; single windows at both floors in flanking bays.

NW (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-bay block to right with single window at ground off-set to right; single window at 1st floor to left. Single storey, 2-bay range adjoined to left with modern window to right; single window to left. Lower rubble range to outer left with single window off-set to right of centre.

SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-storey block to left with single window at ground off-set to left of centre. Timber panelled door in single storey porch recessed to outer left. Single window in single storey, lean-to addition recessed to right. Rubble range recessed to outer right with gabled porch projecting at centre.

Predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; some modern windows at rear; various rooflights. Grey slate piended roofs. Brick-built wallhead stacks; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

GARDEN WALLS, QUADRANT WALLS AND GATEPIERS: rubble-coped rubble walls enclosing garden. Arched coping to rubble quadrant walls flanking entrance to NW; modern gates. Square-plan sandstone gatepiers flanking entrance to SE; gates missing.

Statement of Interest

A good plain traditional farmhouse, fundamentally intact and a good example of its type. The NEW STATISTICAL ACCOUNT (written in 1834) states at that time Greystonelees comprised "...neither mansion nor farm-house, but a pretty good set of offices, and a thrashing-mill driven by water." This "...well built farm dwelling" (OS Name Book) is therefore thought to date from around 1840. Rutherfurd notes a Mr Archibald Nisbet as farmer here in 1866. The steading formerly associated with the house is set to the SE - the threshing mill is no longer apparent.
