Description

Dated 1887, altered at ground 1995. 2-storey, 5-bay Co-operative building altered to library, with pedimented plaque bearing beehive with bees. Polychrome brickwork with channelled pilasters. Corbel courses, ground floor and eaves cornices. Hoodmoulded segmental-headed windows and stone mullions.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 3-bays to ground floor with dividing pilasters and deep fascia, deep-set door to outer left with in-canted display window immediately to right and small display window beyond to right, display windows to centre and right hand bays, and modern entrance to outer right. 1st floor centre bay with decorative stone dated '1887' below bracketed ledge and beehive with bees, frieze above worded 'INDUSTRY', and cornice giving way to moulded pediment. segmental-headed windows in flanking bays and bipartite windows to outer bays with paired brick pilasters beyond.

4-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows, fixed display windows to ground. Grey slates. Coped and shouldered brick stacks with cans; ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts.

Statement of Interest

The new library opened in October 1995 after moving from the Greig Institute (listed separately).
