Description

17th century, rebuilt 1970. Well set in coped granite rubble wall advanced from Strawberry Bank boundary wall, round-arched well opening to centre with mesh cover. Plaque erected by the Corporation of the City of Aberdeen 1970 to upper right reading "THE HARDGATE WELL: This spring figured in the Battle of Justice Mills fought on 13th September 1644 between the Royalist forces under the Marquis of Montrose and the citizens of Aberdeen".

Statement of Interest

Despite the later rebuilding of the Hardgate Well it remains historically important to Aberdeen. It is rumoured that at the Battle of the Justice Mills (the 2nd Battle of Aberdeen) in 1644 it was filled with the blood of the casualties (Aberdeen of Old p86). It was blocked up in 1840, and was not reopened until it was rebuilt by the Corporation of the City of Aberdeen in 1970.
