Description

Circa 1905 with later additions and alterations. Asymmetrical 2-storey and single storey with attic, 3-bay Arts and Crafts house with full-height gabled projection to left; verandah to right; single storey, lean-to addition at rear. Whitewashed harl; painted timber dressings. Overhanging timber bracketed eaves; timber bargeboards; architraved timber margins; timber mullions; flush cills. Single storey, rectangular-plan ancillary structure to N.

SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: gabled projection to left with corniced, 4-light canted window centred at ground; tripartite window aligned at 1st floor; circular window off-set to right at ground beneath swept roof. Lower range recessed to right with full-width, basket-arched verandah to front (flush with gabled projection to left); tripartite window centred at ground within; 4-light box dormer off-set to left above.

SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: gable end with tripartite window centred at ground; bipartite window aligned above; basket-arched verandah beneath swept roof to outer left; timber panelled door recessed within. Single storey, lean-to addition recessed to outer right with part-glazed timber door to left; bipartite window to right.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: small opening centred at ground; 4-light box dormer off-set to right above. Tripartite window at ground to outer left; tripartite window in lean-to projection to outer right.

NW (SIDE) ELEVATION: main block with bipartite window at ground off-set to left of centre; bipartite box dormer breaking eaves above. Single window in single storey, lean-to addition to outer left.

Small-pane timber casement windows throughout. Pantiled roof; iron rainwater goods. Coped and harled ridge stacks; various terracotta cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

ANCILLARY STRUCTURE: 18th to early 19th century. Heavily-pointed rubble. SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: modern garage door at centre. SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: 4-bay. Single windows flanking centre; boarded timber doors to outer left and right (breaking eaves to right). Pantiled roof; red brick ridge stack. INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

GATEPIERS: stop-chamfered, whitewashed harl, square-plan gatepiers flanking entrance with corniced, pyramidal caps; 2-leaf timber gates.

Statement of Interest

A good example of its unusual type, particularly notable for the retention of much of its original detailing. The OS Name Book notes 'Bonnerdub' as being "...two inferior cottages under one roof..." - a description fitting the single storey range which is now the ancillary structure (1999). The 1899 OS map also marks this range as 'Bonnerdub'. The original occupier is said to have been caller 'Bonner' - see OS Name Book.
