Description

Dated 1848, with later additions and alterations. Symmetrical 2-storey with attic, 3-bay, rectangular-plan house with single storey wing and lower, single storey addition at rear forming L-plan; engaged octagonal-plan entrance tower in rear-re-entrant angle to rear. Rubble whinstone and sandstone; cream sandstone dressings. Droved quoins and long and short surrounds to openings; projecting cills. Entrance tower comprising cream sandstone ashlar at ground; painted harl at 1st floor; sandstone margins.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: deep-set, part-glazed timber panelled door centred at ground; blocked fanlight; bracketed canopy. Single windows flanking entrance at ground; single windows in all bays at 1st floor (central cill inscribed 'J N 1848'). Slate-hung, bipartite catslide dormer centred above.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: gable end to left with 3-light glazing row at ground off-set to right. Modern window in single storey block adjoined to right. Lower, single storey block recessed to outer right with boarded timber door to left; single window to right.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: engaged entrance tower at centre with 2-leaf timber panelled door at ground, roll-moulded surround; single windows in all 3 bays at 1st floor; ball-finialled octagonal cap. Single window at ground in bay recessed to right; piended, bipartite dormer aligned above. Single storey range projecting to left with piended, bipartite dormer recessed above.

12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows to front; 6-pane glazing to entrance tower; 4-light dormers. Grey slate roofs; terracotta ridging; stone-coped skews. Brick-built apex stacks to NE and SW main block; squat apex stack to single storey wing; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

Statement of Interest

Although a later addition, the unusual entrance tower is of interest. The lade is set to the E of the house. The remains of Coveyheugh Mill are set to the SE.
