Description

Early to earlier 19th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey (1st floor windows breaking eaves), 3-bay (5-bay at ground) former school house with piended porch at centre. Whitewashed harl with painted dressings (plain harl with rendered dressings to NE). Narrow quoin strips; plain margins; projecting cills.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: projecting later porch at centre with timber door; plate glass fanlight. Narrow windows flanking porch at ground; single windows in bays to outer left and right. Gabled dormerheads to single windows breaking eaves in 3 bays above.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: gable end with single window at ground off-set to left of centre.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: gable end with bipartite window at ground to right. Single window in single storey addition to right.

12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; terracotta ridging; stone-coped skews. Coped and harled ridge and apex stacks; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

BOUNDARY WALLS: coped, harled walls partially enclosing site.

Statement of Interest

Noted in the OS Name Book as "...a neat school house...erected by the heritors of Coldingham..." A good example of an early type. Originally Reston Village School before the opening of the nearby School Board school in 1897 - see separate list entry, 'Reston, Reston Primary School'.
