Description

John Dick Peddie, 1877. 2-storey asymmetrical house, now subdivided, with 3 stage tower and lower 2-storey gabled wing to E (now separate house). Bull-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings. Base course, dividing band between ground and first floor; long and short quoins; stop-chamfered window surrounds with projecting cills supported on consoles; bracketed over-hanging eaves.

W (LOMOND ROAD) ELEVATION: advanced bay to right with 2-storey 3-light canted window, corbelled out to square at gable; rectangular stone panel in gable. Tower at re-entrant angle; stop-chafered surrounds to ground floor windows at N and W, round-arched windows to 1st and 3-light round-arched windows to 2nd floors; conical slated roof with finial and weathervane. Regularly fenestrated bay to left.

N (LENNOX ROW) ELEVATION: advanced bay to right with stone-mullioned 3-light window at ground, 2-light at 1st and rectangular stone panel in gable. 2-bay section to left regularly fenestrated, with entrance in left bay; timber-panelled door with plate glass fanlight in stop-chamfered surround. Lower 2-storey wing to left with timber-panelled door in stop-chamfered surround to right, window to left at ground, and 2 asymmetrically placed windows at 1st.

Plate glass in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Corniced ashlar stacks with decorative circular cans.

Statement of Interest

Mr Cornelius, who had a house-decorating business at 46 Hanover Street, and John Dick Peddie's brother, the CA Donald Smith Peddie, were involved in a disastrous business partnership, which eventually resulted in bankruptcy for both parties.
