Description

Circa 1854. Rough-faced, coursed granite viaduct from Ferryhill to Guild Street Station. 2 painted metal bridges under viaduct at Palmerston Place and Riverside Drive, channelled rustication to piers, tiled inside returns with round-arched doorways under bridge; latticed parapets on pierced ironwork brackets, flanked to left and right by advanced, stepped-up finely finished terminating blocks, coped with dentil mouldings. 14 round-arched openings with painted brick arch-rings to centre between bridges, 10 to SE, 11 to NE, and 2 to NW, many infilled with retail units; 11 open brick lined arches and 2 infilled to SW. Advanced, stepped-up finely finished dividing blocks to parapet, coped with dentil mouldings. Blank walls swept round to NE and SE.

Statement of Interest

In 1850 the first railway train (from the Caledonian railway) crossed the river Dee via the railway viaduct (see separate listing) from the south and stopped at Ferryhill Station, where the line then terminated. This line linked Aberdeen to London, and "was to change the travelling and commercial habit of the town in the space of a few years" (Reid, p54). The Arches represent the beginning of the extension of the railway north, towards the centre of Aberdeen at Guild Street Station, and eventually beyond.
