Description

1898 rebuilding of earlier structure; re-fronted by John Houston 1910; minor later 20th century alterations to ground floor . 2-storey public house with pedimented 3-bay Edwardian Baroque street (E) front. Street elevation of sandstone ashlar, painted at ground floor level; harled with sandstone ashlar dressings elsewhere. Moulded 1st floor cill band to E (street) and S elevations; dentilled cornice to ground floor and moulded band course above 1st floor windows to street elevation; eaves band to N and S elevations. Pedimented 1st floor windows with moulded architraves to street elevation.

E (STREET) ELEVATION: flanking outer entrances; panelled folding timber door with ventilated rectangular fanlight to that to left; replacement timber door to right. Large central window in between. Fascia board above with flanking pedimented outer stone brackets. 1st floor bays divided by pilasters (panelled at lower level). Central 2-light window with column supporting bracket as mullion (continued as pilaster to bolection-moulded frieze above and below cill); open-topped pediment above with fleur-de-lys motif at centre adjoins band course. Segmental pediment to flanking outer windows. Shaped pediment above with moulded band course across central bay; miniature semicircular pediment at apex; miniature pediments above flanking outer pilasters to outer bays.

S ELEVATION: 2 entrances with replacement timber doors to left; 3 windows above.

2-pane timber sash and case windows, apart from large multi-pane fixed light replacement window to street (E) elevation. Grey slate roof.

INTERIOR: ground floor modernised.

Statement of Interest

Exterior intact; only alteration appears to be replacement of large 6-light mullioned window to ground floor of street elevation with multi-pane single light window of same dimensions.
