Description

Late 19th century. Carriage gateway with flanking pedestrian gateways; situated at the junction of B703, Newbattle Road and Abbey Road. Central replacement 2-leaf gates; 2 corniced, chamfered and panelled sandstone piers on moulded bases; surmounted by unicorns supporting heraldic shields bearing Lothian sun motif and initials WL (William, Marquis of Lothian) sitting above corniced square, panelled blocks carved with Lothian coat of arms and sun motif. Flanking original pedestrian gates and chamfered and corniced outer piers surmounted by Lothian sun finials resting upon urns with floreate bases. Snecked sandstone quadrant walls; ashlar base and corniced coping terminate with plain chamfered corniced piers with urn finial before joining Newbattle Road and Abbey Road rubble walls.

A-Group with Newbattle Abbey, Newbattle Abbey Policies Fernery, Grotto and Ice House, Lothian Burial Ground, Maiden Bridge, Monkland Wall, North and South Sundials, Port Lodge, Lamb's Nursery, Archbishop Leighton's House, 1-5 Riverside Cottages, Old Bridge, Newmills Road, Dalkeith Lodge in Dalkeith Burgh and The King's Gate in Cockpen Parish. These were once entrance gates with a lodge to Newbattle Estate. Eskbank Lodge is visible on 1894 OS Map but no longer remains. The gates now serve as an entrance to St David's Roman Catholic High School grounds.
