Description

Later 19th century. Single storey, basement and attic, 4-bay semi-detached block comprising 2 2-bay mirrored cottages. Tooled coursed grey granite finely finished to margins of S elevation; coursed granite rubble to remainder. Strip quoins; hood moulds over doorways with Tudor label stops; band course.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical; 3-light bowed windows to centre 2 bays of basement and ground floor, rising to 3-light pilastered timber bowed dormers breaking eaves of attic floor with dentil moulded cornices. Glazed panelled timber doors with letterbox fanlights to flanking bays to outer left and right, reached by stone steps, round-arched dormers to attic floor above.

E ELEVATION: gabled.

N ELEVATION: not seen 1999.

W ELEVATION: gabled; symmetrical; 2 round-arched windows to centre, small attic window set in gablehead.

Predominantly 4-pane timber sash and case windows; replacement PVCu window to left of attic at No 250. Grey slate roof with lead ridge. Coped stone skews with blocked skewputts. Coped granite gablehead stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

BOUNDARY WALLS: coped coursed granite walls to S, rubble walls to rear.

Statement of Interest

248 and 250 Rosemount Place follow the same formula of the "Aberdeen Cottage" (Brogden), developed from the Butt and Ben by the 1820's. They usually have 2 main rooms on the ground floor, a smaller room tucked behind and further accommodation in the attic, lit by canted dormers. However, 248 and 250 Rosemount Place form one of the grander examples in Rosemount, here the canted window has been replaced by a bow, as has the traditional dormer. The doorway too is more decorative.
