Description

Mid 19th century. Single storey and attic, 3-bay, rectangular-plan former lodge to Aboyne Castle. Rough-faced, squared coursed grey granite with finely finished margins. Base course; chamfered reveals; long and short vertically banded quoins; overhanging eaves with timber bargeboards and kingpost details.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; gableted porch advanced to centre of ground floor, glazed and panel timber door reached by single step, tooled panel bearing "H" surmounted by a crown set in gablehead; 2-light window to ground floor of bay to right; canted window to ground floor of bay to right. 2-pane skylight to centre of attic floor; gableted window breaking eaves to bay to right of attic; 2-light window set in gablehead of bay to left.

SE ELEVATION: near-symmetrical; shouldered advanced flue to centre of wall with tooled panel reading BYDAND; lean-to addition adjoining boundary wall to outer right.

NE ELEVATION: ground floor not seen 1998; window set in gablehead to bay to right.

NW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; shouldered advanced flue to centre breaking eaves, 2-light window to ground floor, recessed tooled panel with shield surmounted by crown above; small-pane timber door to flanking bay to left; single storey, flat-roofed addition to outer left with 2 small windows.

Predominantly 2 and 3-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof with lead ridge. Coped, paired circular-plan gablehead stack to SE; coped, shouldered granite triple wallhead stack to NW. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

BOUNDARY WALLS: squared and snecked rough-faced granite boundary walls with rough-faced coping to SE of lodge.

Statement of Interest

Bydand was formerly the South Lodge to Aboyne Castle, until it was replaced by the present South Lodge in 1889 (see separate listing).
