Late 18th-early 19th century; restored 1986 by R Callander, Master Dyker and Drystane Dyker. Circular-plan grain kiln built into N facing slope to N of Haughend. Pink granite rubble battered walls. Rubble-walled flue to N at base of kiln, stone lintel. Granite and earth ramp to S leading to top of kiln.
The grain kiln at Haughend was originally part of a crofting township, and is shown on an 1801 map in History in Birse (see above). The foundations of the 5 crofts and another kiln still survive. The township was cleared in about 1830, at which time it seems likely that the kiln was closed in to prevent livestock from falling into it. Robin Callander, at that time Master Dyker and Drystane Dyker by Royal appointment to H. M. the Queen, repaired the part collapsed kiln in 1986. The remnants of the fire and some peat were still in situ.
