HV Eaglesham, late 19th century. 2-storey and attic, 4-bay house adjacent to the former Sandgate Church. Red sandstone ashlar; brick to side. Consoled shopfront cornice; main cornice; corniced dies to deep blocking course.
SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: deeply recessed shop entrance to left; glazed timber door; shop window to right; timber door to outer right, letterbox fanlight; 4 single windows at 1st floor; pilaster mullions divide bays; 3-light central pedimented window at attic; pilasters delineate bays.
Shop window at ground floor, 4- and 6-panes to upper sashes of timber sash and case windows at 1st and attic floors. Grey slate pavilion roof; corniced brick wallhead stacks; circular cans.
INTERIOR: not seen 1998.
Formerly standing on the site, was the house of John Murdoch, burgh schoolmaster from 1772-6. A sketch in PICTORIAL HISTORY OF AYR (see References) depicts the thatched building prior to demolition (circa 1894). A plaque on the present building is inscribed, "Here stood the house of John Murdoch Schoolmaster, in which Robert Burns lodged in his fourteenth year, and received lessons in English and French." Of particular interest are the pilastered mullions at 1st floor and the pedimented window within the pavilion roof.
