Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay villa with Scots Baronial details. Tooled Aberdeen bond granite finely finished to margins. Base course; chamfered reveals; segmental-arched openings to ground floor.

NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; doorway to centre bay of ground floor, moulded lintel with keystone detail, panelled timber door flanked by glazed panels, fanlight reading "3 Hamilton Lodge"; single window to flanking bay to left; 2 gableted windows to 1st floor above, breaking eaves, thistle and fleur-de-lys finials to apex, floreate paterae set in gableheads; circular-plan angle turret to outer left, corbelled out at 1st floor, single window to centre, conical roof. Gabled bay slightly advanced to right, window with keystone detail to centre of ground floor, 3-light canted oriel window corbelled out to 1st floor above, decorative stone finial to apex.

SW ELEVATION: bowed bay through ground and 1st floors to left; remainder not seen 2000.

SE ELEVATION: not seen 2000.

NE ELEVATION: gabled; single windows to centre of ground and 1st floors.

Predominantly 2-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof with lead ridge. Coped stone skews with gableted skewputts. Coped gablehead and ridge stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low Aberdeen bond coped granite walls to N and E.

Statement of Interest

In the second half of the 19th century Aberdeen began to expand westwards following the introduction of the granite trade and the expansion of the harbour. 3 Hamilton Place is a good example of type of 19th century villas which emerged at that time. The Scots Baronial style was much favoured, possibly following the example of Balmoral. Features of note at 3 Hamilton Place include the angle turret, oriel windows, bowed bay and decorative gablets.
