Description

Late 19th century. 3-storey and attic, 3-bay tenement. Coursed grey granite ashlar. Cill course to 1st and 2nd floors; deep eaves cornice; eaves blocking course.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical; pilastered timber doorway to centre of ground floor, panelled timber door with geometrically glazed fanlight above, modern shop fronts flanking to left and right; single window to centre bay at 1st and 2nd floors, flanked to left and right by 3-light canted oriel windows through 1st and 2nd floors forming balcony at attic floor; centre bay of attic floor breaking eaves, round-arched window to centre, with projecting cill and keystone detail, surmounted by pediment, flanked to left and right by large stylised scrolls; 2 segmental-arched timber dormers flanking to left and right of attic floor, bipartite window to each.

NE ELEVATION: part gabled; blank, harled brick to right, blind window opening to left of 1st floor.

NW ELEVATION: not seen 2000.

SW ELEVATION: gabled; ground floor obscured by adjoining building, remainder blank.

Predominantly timber sash and case windows with small-pane upper sashes, some replacement. Grey slate mansard roof with lead ridges. Coped stone skews. Coped gablehead stacks with circular cans; corniced stack to apex of pedimented central bay of SE elevation. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

Statement of Interest

Good example of a traditional late 19th century tenement of classical derivation. Details of particular note include the shallow canted oriels through 1st and 2nd floors, and decorative scrolls flanking pedimented centre bay of attic floor.
