Description

Later to late 19th century. Rectangular-plan walled garden (approximately 6,000m?). Tall, coped, squared and tooled pink sandstone rubble walls (heavily-pointed in part) to NW, NE and SW; low, coped rubble wall to SE; ashlar quoins and long and short surrounds to openings; red brick inner lining to NW. Depressed-arched entrance centred in NW wall with 2-leaf, decorative wrought-iron gate. Round-arched entrances to NE and SW with decorative wrought-iron gates. Lean-to, red brick potting shed range adjoining outer elevation NW wall; remains of lean-to greenhouses adjoining inner elevation, flanking central entrance. Low wall enclosing site to SE with plain iron railings above; square-plan, pyramidal-capped ashlar piers flanking central opening and terminating wall to outer left and right. Separate brick-built gatepiers to SE with 2-leaf, decorative wrought-iron gate.

Statement of Interest

B Group comprises 'Hutton Castle', 'Hutton Castle, Boundary Walls, Railings, Pier, Gatepiers and Gates at West Lodge', 'Hutton Castle, East Lodge', 'Hutton Castle, Quadrant Walls, Gatepiers and Gates at East Lodge', 'Hutton Castle, Walled Garden' and 'Hutton Castle, West Lodge' - see separate list entries. Set to the SW of Hutton Castle but now in separate ownership (1999). A relatively late but large, well-detailed walled garden - the decorative iron gates and red brick inner lining being particularly good. Heavily overgrown, little can be seen of the original formal layout. Ruinous remains of separate greenhouses to N.
