Description

Dated 1859. Rectangular-plan walled garden (approximately 2,000m?) to NW of Spital House. Squared coping to tall, tooled rubble sandstone walls with droved sandstone dressings enclosing sides to N, E and W; swept, lower wall to S; red brick inner linings throughout with cream sandstone ashlar dressings. Boarded timber door to E with sandstone panel embossed 'W C L 1859' above. Lean-to potting shed adjoining outer elevation N wall. Modern, rectangular-plan greenhouse within; little remains of formal layout.

Statement of Interest

Set to the NW of and still associated with Spital House, 1999 - see separate list entry. Although there is little evidence of the original formal layout (as shown on the early OS map), the garden remains a good example of its type. The initials 'W C L' are thought to stand for the Rev William Compton Lundie - noted in Rutherfurd's as owner and resident here in 1866.
